Trail Review: New River Gorge National Park’s Endless Wall Trail

I mean, enough said from one picture right? With a view like that, do you even really need to write a trail review? Of course I do, because its what we do here. The final big trip of the Summer of 2024 brought me to West Virginia to visit my sibling. Naturally we had to hit New River Gorge National Park (given my obsession with being in the wild). I only had a day to see what I could in the Park, but we really made the most of that day. We set out early and got to the Trailhead of the Endless Wall hike. First tip- If the first parking lot is full, park at the next one and walk down the road. Its what we did and it made it so we popped out at the end of the hike right next to our car.

The trail itself is very well maintained and very clearly marked as are the major overlooks and rock climbing access points. This is clearly one of the better loved trails in New River Gorge. We encountered a great many fellow hikers on our trip, but the trail and the overlooks are all large enough to accommodate the traffic. Additionally the mileage that is listed there is pretty accurate. A pleasant change from my backcountry trek in Shenandoah a month prior to this one. The entire Endless Wall Trail came out to be about 3 miles and can be generally described as a pretty easy trail. It has a few gradual inclines, some areas where you need to traverse some rocks or get close to a cliff edge, but nothing even casual hikers can’t handle.

Overall Rating:

Best Parts: The intensely beautiful view of this spectacular Gorge.

Worst Parts: Parking and maybe some mud (Seriously its that good that my only complaint is parking and mud.)

Difficulty: Low Difficulty-Easy

Recommendation: If you only have a day to spend in New River, this is a MUST. Stunning hike, beautiful overlooks. Low risk- High reward. Do it!
