Did a sunrise hike at Fair Hill Natural Resource Area. Wanted to get some hiking in, but motivation is hard to come by with it being this cold. With Seningen down for recovery from his surgery, I have discovered that I am not as enthusiastic about walking through the ice and cold as he is. In any case, this time I did a combo trail loop.
For this hike, I started at the North-Appleton Trail Head and followed the Green Trail to begin with. This section of the trail was pretty cool. It wound through the forest past several very cool ruins. This farm house ruin had a silo on the other side of it. This part of the Green Trail also crossed several streams, ridges, and over hills. The trail was clearly marked and easy to follow. To do the loop that I did, you follow the green trail until you get to the bridge near the nature center. You will then see a cut off for the “Stupid Hill Trail” which I loved for its name alone.

Now, I certainly shouldn’t complain about the “Stupid Hill Trail” considering that I went into it knowing full well what the name was. That being said, this trail had a stupid stupid hill. Shocking news I am sure. While it was a lot of elevation increase, it was also a pretty cool hike. Because of the shadows of the hill, the snow was still in place and made a beautiful scene. When you reach the top of the “Stupid Hill” the trail looped back toward the Appleton North Parking lot. Overall the cut off is about a mile and half.
Overall Rating:
Best Part: It is a tie between the ruins and the name of the trail itself.
Worst part: Stupid Hill was a Stupid Hill. Who could have guessed.
Recommendation: Take the hike. It was a very peaceful one with plenty to see.
Difficulty: Moderate- Elevation being the only difficult part.
